O.K. Gaymon Cabin

Location/Directions

Gaymon CabinThis log bungalow, built in 1914, was the second Breckenridge home of Oren K. Gaymon, founder of Dillon's Enterprise, the first newspaper in Dillon, and the third editor and publisher of the Summit County Journal, and his wife, Augusta “Gussie” K. Childress Gaymon. The structure was moved in 1988 from its original site, which was located behind a stately two-story Victorian house one block south on Main Street. O.K. had this simple cabin constructed for the ailing Gussie who had increasing difficulty getting around and keeping their large and cluttered house clean.

The four-room bungalow is typical of a style popular from 1910 to 1930. It has wood-paneled ceilings, a large, rustic, river rock fireplace that is popular with visitors, built-in cabinets, exposed structural beams and electric wiring.

O.K., one of the county's first newspapermen, brought his printing presses over Boreas Pass and down Indiana Gulch with sled and wagon. It was probably harder to transport the presses here than to move this house from its previous site.

Directions: The Gaymon Cabin is located at 309 North Main Street, Breckenridge, across the street from the Red, White, and Blue firehouse. From Blue River Plaza in the center of Breckenridge, proceed north on Main Street (toward Frisco) for approximately two blocks. Gaymon Cabin is on the left (west) side of the street and has a sign in the front yard indicating that visitor information is available inside.
